Tenacious D – Tenacious D

Tenacious D
Artist: Tenacious D
Title: Tenacious D
Label: Epic
Rating: 5.5/10

Tenacious D is a group of idiots, I mean actors, playing guitar with the likes of the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and others, pretending to be rock stars. Are they pretending? Are they egomaniacs? Or are they just a couple stupid comedians who got a record deal? The latter works for me.

Actually Tenacious D is a standup routine that Jack Black and Kyle Gass have had for some years now, and I guess someone decided it would be funny to record it. Jack Black is the chubby, funny guy who’s been in Foo Fighters’ “Learn To Fly” video, he’s been in High Fidelity opposite John Cusack and Saving Silverman. He’s a funny guy. Kyle Gass was a bit actor in Cradle Will Rock, also with Jack Black.

Okay, enough on these guys, how is the record? Well, it’s a combination of the Presidents Of The United States mixed with Adam Sandler. Hearing things like “One Note Song”, I didn’t really laugh out of hilarity but more out of the fact that they sounded like idiots. Listening to “Tribute” I couldn’t help but think Charlie Daniels will come back to kick these guys’ asses.

Then there is the metal. Like heavy metal hasn’t been dogged enough, Tenacious D has to go and toy with it more on “Explosivo” and “Dio”. I have the feeling these guys are really metal heads at heart.

Tenacious D do have some talent, but most of it is acting. They can play interestingly on tracks like “Friendship”. The song could have been good if serious, so that shows me they are talented, but overall Tenacious D’s album is more of a one listen. After that, you won’t find yourself looking for it again.
