Tantric – After We Go

Tantric
Artist: Tantric
Title: After We Go
Label: Maverick
Rating: 4/10

Corporate Line: How do you follow a platinum-selling album that featured a #1 hit, a top 10 and a top 20 single, and rocketed all the way to #4 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart? If you’re Tantric, you hunker down in a Nashville studio with producer Toby Wright (Korn, Alice In Chains) for a couple of months and emerge with a record that actually one-ups its hugely successful predecessor. The Louisville, Kentucky-based quartet have outdone themselves with the eagerly anticipated After We Go, an electrifying album built on swaggering riffs, stacked harmonies and hook-filled shimmering melodies.

The Good:
Yeah, right.

The Average:
“Hey Now” – Mostly a shameless single without deep lyrics or anything else for that matter – but hey they shout ‘hey now’ over and over. That should be enough to get it on the radio.
“Chasing After” and “After We Go” – Singer Hugo Ferreira ponders what they are searching for – I have a thought – what about a unique voice. Ferreira seems torn between trying to pull off Axl Rose and every other alternative rock singer. There is nothing unique here.
“Hero” – Tantric saw that Nickelback made a mint off a ballad and guess what? They thought this might a good idea to try. There is a difference however; Nickelback’s song was actually good.

The Ugly:
“Relentless” – Axl Rose called… and he is not happy. Ferreira needs to figure out if he wants to be a bad clone or himself.

Frankly: When you mix Alice in Chains with Axl Rose you get Tantric with much less talent. Tantric spins their wheels halfway through the record and you’ll start to hear the same thing over and over again. Tantric should be called Run of the Mill.
