Taxiride – Imaginate

Taxiride
Artist: Taxiride
Title: Imaginate
Label: Sire
Rating: 6/10

A cross between Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and Van Halen, Taxiride manages to create a semi-authentic style. While rather non-descriptive, the group shows basic potential for the future; the band merely needs to find their own personal groove.

Australia based, all four members contribute both instrumentally and vocally. The vocal blend is so tight that it is often difficult to distinguish the four members from each other. Hall, Watson, Wild, and Singh’s harmonies are often close in major and augmented chords that are pleasing to the ear, yet somewhat redundant. The first track, “Can You Feel”, is by far the best of the bunch on the disc. Vocals and acoustic guitars produce a mellow sound that makes one forget about the trite lyrics. All in all, the music itself is the best thing about this album. In general, the lyrics are juvenile odes to lost loves and admirable girlfriends. Tracks such as “Everywhere You Go” and “Let’s Spend the Night” exhibit once again excellent music and paltry lyrics.

Instrumentally, Taxiride is extremely talented. Each band member plays multiple instruments. This diversity creates some of the only ambiance on the album. “Get Set” combines an intriguing mix of Indian sitar and Moroccan percussive along with some of the only electric guitar riffs on the album. Songs are never too heavy or clogged, so don’t expect any Pantera-like intensity.

Taxiride definitely possesses the talent that may skyrocket in the future with a little help from radio. With some catchier lyrics to match the masterful music, all band members and listeners could benefit. This album is recommended for those that enjoy a mellow rock sound.
