David Sylvian – Dead Bees On A Cake

David Sylvian
Artist: David Sylvian
Title: Dead Bees On A Cake
Label: Virgin
Rating: 5.5/10

There are not many musicians or bands that let the singing carry the music, but David Sylvian’s voice is well-tuned instrument. David Sylvian began his career with the Brit-band Japan in the 70’s and 80’s, then left Japan to pursue his own interests. Over the years he’s had success with solo albums such as Brilliant Trees and Secrets of the Beehive. His latest album, Dead Bees On a Cake, is a mellow beauty. His voice is strong throughout, filled with emotion and a dreamy depth in tone that is very attractive. The opening ballad, “I Surrender”, is evidence of how Sylvian’s voice has matured over the years. The standout track is “Midnight Sun”. This song is a slow, burning, deep blues number. Guitarist Marc Ribot complements Sylvian’s style by laying down a howling guitar ambiance.

Sylvian over the years has worked with various talents, but the influence of both Robert Fripp (lead guitarist for King Crimson) and Ryuichi Sakamoto (Japanese composer) is heard continuously throughout this album. Tracks such as “God-man”, ” Krishna Blues”, and “Praise”, which features a Japanese female singer, all show the guidance of the artists David has worked with in the past. “Krishna Blues” is a journey guided by tablas and flutes and again Sylvian steps up and delivers. The flowing words, “I’d cover the river to swim back to you/ Krishna Blues”, add an elegant touch to the music. A surprisingly weird tune is “All My Mother’s Names (Summers with Amma)”. Ribot’s guitars produce crazy feedback and eccentric soundscapes that blend in with the methodical tabla playing, mellotron, and strings. This song is like a six-minute drug-induced daze, confusing at times, but peaceful, and interesting if you can handle it. The arrangements, style, and substance of Slyvian’s work may be hard for some listeners to enjoy, but if you’re the kind of person who likes background music while you work or relax, Dead Bees On a Cake may become your favorite treat.
