The Shys – Astoria

The Shys
Artist: The Shys
Title: Astoria
Label: Sire
Rating: 4/10

FILE UNDER: BMRC, Rolling Stones, The Clash, The Strokes, and everyone else.

CORPORATE LINE: Described as “the perfect hybrid of LA rock and classic British rock”, southern California’s Shys are a blistering four-piece featuring Iggy style vox and hints of all the Stones: the Rolling Stones, Stone Roses, and Sly And The Family Stone. Having already performed with The Color, Redwalls, Killers, and more, they’re quickly making a name for themselves. This is their Sire debut.

THE GOOD:
“Waiting On The Sun” – The Shys hit a chorus that is all to familiar to a Rolling Stones song and verses that invoke David Bowie. That might be the reason we are okay with listening to it more than once. But don’t get us wrong—it’s good—but not great.

THE AVERAGE:
“Never Gonna Die” – The Shys make average punk rock that doesn’t bring anything new.
“The Resistance” – Another song that had a lot of potential as the verses rock as the chorus tries to hard to be gritty and punk rock but lacks a quality hook.
“Call In The Cavalry” – More of the same. The Shys try hard to do what is already being done by BRMC, The Jets, The Strokes, and the list goes on.
“Astoria” and “Having It Large” – The Shys do the Clash without being great.
“Radio Rebellion” – The funny thing about The Shys are their fight against radio while copying bands that are successful because of their airplay. Sounds like hypocrisy.

THE BAD:
A few songs came close.

FRANKLY: The Shys are a band that was signed because they fill a niche for a record label trying to find their Strokes or Franz Ferdinand. The Shys aren’t in that league. Astoria is second-rate and never lives up to those bands they are desperately trying to imitate.
