North Carolina’s own Superchunk have been in the business for quite some time. They lived long and hard under indie representation for their entire careers, never really having that huge breakout song, but all along they’ve continued to do it for the music. Here’s To Shutting Up is their eighth full-length release and they seem to be back to their old selves.
Vocalist Mac McCaughan sounds like a fifteen-year-old sucking on a helium balloon as he tries to make sense of “Late-Century Dream”. “Phone Sex” sounds more like a ride through the south with your favorite cowboy or cowgirl in tow. “Florida’s On Fire” is some odd track, and though I can’t quite make out what I like about it, it’s still keeping me excited.
One thing I’ve noticed about Here’s To Shutting Up is that it’s a real headphone album. My first few listens, just tooling around town, I didn’t really fall for the record, but it didn’t take long once I grabbed my headphones and took another angle that I found the album growing on me.
