Submarine is stepping into a line of bands attempting to bring techno-rock monotony into America where it has failed time and again. Better groups before them, like Morcheeba, Olive, and Portishead, have failed to move ahead with this mix and I can’t expect Submarine will do any better. The only group to convert this into dollars has been Garbage. Why only them? Because they kick out great songs with expansive pop melodies, not songs that float along in bland monotony.
Submarine is just blah. The verse and so on absorb the chorus. There is no song that sticks out. Nothing pulls you in. The beats may sound fantastic, but with vocals that lull you to sleep, it’s hard to really enjoy this album.
