The Cheetahs’ have released two previous cd’s on Alive, Heart Full of Napalm (’96) and Overdrive (’97). They spent ’98 releasing singles: one a collaboration with original Runaway singer Cherie Currie, one a pairing with Radio Birdman mastermind Deniz Tek, and a split-Christmas single with the BellRays.
Their new disc was recorded during a live in-studio performance on Noyz Pollution, a radio program on the leading Los Angeles college radio station, KXLU. The Cheetahs were so happy with the results that they began passing tapes around to friends, one of which ended up at Triple X, where the label urged the band to release the recording. So now, got live if you want it: Live at KXLU. The recording was mixed live to dat tape during the performance, and was not tampered with in post-production. It features mostly new material that has been the focus of the Cheetahs live show. A bonus disc has been added to the package which features two cuts produced by the band’s spiritual mentor, guitarist Wayne Kramer. Angelo Moore, the charismatic frontman of Fishbone, joins in on saxophone. The final track is a lengthy jam between Kramer and the band, confirming the direct link between the Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs and the proto-punk sounds of Detroit. (Please note: promotional versions of Live on KXLU feature the KXLU show and the bonus tracks on the disc).
The Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs have issued a communique stating their mission: To revive everything you used to know about rock ‘n’ roll-to rebuild it into a loud and proud, twisted, demonic rock ‘n’ roll machine.
