My Line: Steve Miller is amazing. I listened to this album for a good two weeks before I realized I was supposed to be reviewing it and not just having a good time. Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too.
The Good:
“The Joker” – “Some people call me the space cowboy/ Some call me the gangster of love.” Who couldn’t love this song?
“Fly Like An Eagle” – Everyone has heard this song either in a commercial for the post office or on the oldies station. One of his best.
“Take The Money And Run” – Oooh Oooh Oooh.
“Rockin’ Me” – You’ve heard the song, unless you’ve been living in a hole. Chances are you didn’t know it was the Steve Miller Band, so now you know. “Keep on rockin’ me baby.” And for some reason the original song title was changed from “Rock ‘N Me”.
“Jet Airliner” – The great tracks just keep on coming.
The Average:
“Abracadabra” – I loved this song as a kid; actually it was one of the first albums I ever bought. Now? It sounds dated unlike the rest of the songs.
The Ugly:
There is a reason he was called the gangster of love.
Frankly: This is not as good as it could have been. Steve Miller’s music isn’t to blame, it’s the lack of linear notes. It would have been nice if those new fans could figure out what albums the songs came from so they could go buy the full record. My theory is because almost all the songs come from “Fly Like An Eagle” and “Book Of Dreams” and people might wonder why a greatest hits album consists mostly of two records. Answer: because those two albums were classics. I think we can agree this record is to attract new listeners and not to compensate for the Steve Miller albums we already own.
I know we should just be happy with the album. It won’t replace your Steve Miller album collection but it sure puts it into a nice tidy compilation. Better yet – it might inspire a new generation to find the Steve Miller Band.
