The Spice Girls – Forever

The Spice Girls
Artist: The Spice Girls
Title: Forever
Label: Virgin
Rating: 4/10

When was the last time a huge group had a release come so quietly? The Spice Girls at one time dominated the world the way NSYNC, the Backstreet Boys, and Britney do now. Maybe its the glut in pop music today, but after selling almost forty million records and a movie, youd think thered be some buzz. I heard at least two pins drop when Mel C. released her solo album. Now nothing.

I cant believe after listening to the album that they opted for R&B writers and producers instead of some big pop honchos. Forever feels too much like it belongs to Destinys Child rather than the Spice Girls.

The songs are bland, slow, and without life. I guess when Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell) left, she took all the fun with her. The Spice Girls sound more like the Blah Girls. Just listen to “Tell Me Why”, “Let Love Lead The Way”, “Get Down With Me”, “Wasting My Time”, “Weekend Love”, and “Oxygen”. All are soulless love songs. There is no hit and the hooks are lacking.

The tracks that have a tempo which could possibly get you out of bed, like “Holler” for example, are just as bland and too much like the Backstreet Boys. The Spice Girls are now the wannabes. “If U Wanna Have Fun” is girl power, just too far south of the real girl power fun track Cindy Lauper did fifteen years ago.

I was certain Forever was going to be huge, especially with all the competition they are going to have on pop radio. Perhaps Forever isnt going to last as long as theyd hoped.
