Company Line: Spritualized goes for the White Stripes. Heaven has moved to the garage.
The Good:
“The Ballad of Richie Lee” – The one track that doesn’t sound pretentious and overly thought out. Minimalism at its best.
The Average:
“This Little Life of Mine” – Yes it sounds like that song you sang in bible studies – with the exception of loud, distorted guitars. It’s a change up for Pierce and not as forgiving.
“Hold On”, “Lay It Down Slow” and “Oh Baby” – They’re lovely but love isn’t always great. I love my cup of tea in the morning but I wouldn’t say it was a great cup of tea.
“Lord Let It Rain On Me” – Give me the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack over this any day. Not only is it more spiritual, but it’s real – not forced and generic.
The Ugly:
“She Kissed Me” – Pierce says the White Stripes influenced their new energy, for a minute I thought it was my neighbors garage band.
Frankly: I was a huge fan of Spiritualized and couldn’t wait to get this record. What a sad, sad let down. Spirtualized go from spiritual to garage-garbage band. Spritualized used to set the standard – now they sound like a group who is trying to damn hard. Polyphonic Spree stole Pierce’s show and now he’s trying to catch a race he started.
