Spirtualized – Royal Albert Hall Live

Spirtualized
Artist: Spirtualized
Title: Royal Albert Hall Live
Label: EMI
Rating: 8/10

Royal Albert Hall Live opens with “Oh Happy Day”, a rock-gospel anthem that makes you feel a little bit blessed, but it has nothing to do with religious enlightenment and everything to do with Spiritualized’s climactic energy. Their avant-garde mixture of blues, country, gospel, and thick-distorted guitar revisits days past when bands like Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, and The Velvet Underground ruled the land. Spiritualized creates a musical elixir for all that ails you.

Singer/songwriter Jason Pierce is the genius behind the sound that takes the road traveled most recently by the Verve and Radiohead. The flutes, organs, bells, horns, strings, and piano intermingle with soul to create a frenzied sound affair. The album also features a complete gospel choir.

This album is a marathon many will be unable to complete upon their initial attempt. “Cop Shoot Cop” tears on for sixteen minutes making you feel exhausted and liberated in spite of yourself. Royal Albert Hall is the album of the year that you never heard and through it Spiritualized instigates a music renaissance all their own.
