Houston couldn’t contain him, so now he’s cast his rhymes around the world. SPM (aka South Park Mexican) brings his fourth release, Time Is Money, an album full of truths and lessons.
SPM combines a B-Real style of vocals with a rhythmic flow that’s as easy to sing to as rap. “Hillwood Hustlaz II” is as easy on the melody as a nursery rhyme. “Oh My My” boasts a friendly hook ready for radio.
The nonsensical madness of “Ohh Wee” brings a fresh lightheartedness to Time Is Money. I’m not as high on “Boys On Da Cut”, a take off of Eazy-E’s “Boyz-N-Tha Hood”. “Medicine” is a harsh sort of ballad: gritty, furious, but mostly disturbing. You take your salt. “Throw Away Gats” tells us that the streets will always be there but the road you choose is up to you. Live by the streets, die by the streets.
SPM has a history of drug deals, guns, and all sorts of a troubled past. He has practiced what he’s preached. That alone doesn’t make him a great rapper; it’s the way he brings it all to life. SPM doesn’t hype the behavior of his past, instead he asks you to decide what is right. It’s a lesson he learned so you don’t have to.
