Sponge’s latest release is pop sans shame. New Pop Sunday is one in a long line of great Sponge releases. If you have overlooked them before, don’t make the same mistake twice.
“My Lackluster Love” has a chorus that is catchy and will have you singing “La’s” all day and night. I spent more than one day trying to shake the infectious chorus. There are no low points on this album; no songs that will make you want to push that fast forward button. “Pollyanna” finds Vinnie Dombroski singing about lost love and life. “Planet Girls” is truly spacey. It does sometimes lack in the verse but makes up for it in a big way during the chorus. The guitar riffs weave wonderfully throughout the chorus, playing well against Vinnie’s vocals and almost creating an entirely new voice.
There are three songs that really demand attention. “All American World” is very Bowie. It is wonderfully put together from verse to chorus and will have you singing along in no time. “Radio Prayer Line” is a journey through a lost life found through the hope of a prayer answered. “When You’re On Fire Baby, Roll” is the most ridiculous song title I’ve seen in a while, but the song is fabulous. Vinnie Dombroski has the gift of melody. This song sounds much like the Black Crowes and is rock ‘n’ roll at its best. The comical element only adds to the construction of a well-built rock foundation.
Sponge has made a fan of me. They have truly outdone themselves with New Pop Sunday.
