If you’re looking for the same old Stabbing Westward then you won’t be happy, but if you are ready for a more mature and intelligent band then you’ll love their latest release.
“So Far Away” glitters with rock glory rooted around a fabulous hook and “Perfect” doesn’t let off the gas. It starts off slow, but don’t be fooled by the pulse. They do however slow it to a halt on “I Remember”. This is SW like you’ve not heard them before. I find it refreshing, more than just a breath of fresh air, complete and utter reinvention. Brilliant and affecting.
“Wasted goes about it heavy tripping into the soulful “Happy”. What a great one-two punch. Once you take your hands from your face, you get a punch straight to the belly. And once you are content with that, you get the gorgeous “The Only Thing”.
All I know is whatever Stabbing Westward is having, I want mine too. Their self-titled fourth release is a completely new direction, and one hell of a risk if you ask me, but it’s every bit as good as anything they’ve ever done. Not to mention it is perhaps the best album I’ve heard all year long. Whoever said evolution was a bad thing?
