Corporate Line: Final Straw is hair-tingling stuff. Received to wide ranging critical acclaim in Europe upon its release last year, its impact was almost immediate. Both singles, Spitting Games and Run were championed by Radio One. The band, meanwhile, picked up some notable admirers and last year, beardy prog-rockers, Grandaddy took them on a sold out UK tour.
The Good:
“How To Be Dead” – You won’t need the coronary to wake you from your slumber.
“Chocolate” – Yummy. It tastes good the more bites you take without all the guilty feelings. Seriously, just give it a taste, you’ll be back again and again.
“Whatever’s Left” – It takes some time before you fall for it—“you must know that I’ll follow you!”
“Run” – Starts off walking, then jogs, only to hit the forty yard dash then settles back down for a breath.
The Average:
“Wow” – Goes ‘round and ‘round gathering steam entirely intending to rock this funky joint.
“Spitting Games” – Rock ‘N’ Roll is in their soul—however toning it down and working it all out would have been best for all.
The Ugly: Nothing.
Frankly: Snow Patrol are at their wickedly best when shuttling through the fluffy snow rather than the blizzard-style rock. It’s their light and airy textures of multiple snowflake configurations that keep your ears interested. When Snow Patrol finds the distortion they smash all remnants of that uniqueness.
