Smash Mouth – Astro Lounge

Smash Mouth
Artist: Smash Mouth
Title: Astro Lounge
Label: Interscope
Rating: 6/10

Astro Lounge is filled with spacey ’60’s psychedelic pop. “Who’s There” paints this picture well, though not brilliantly. Still, it’s doable. I don’t think it’s possible for these guys to express their love for the sound of the psychedelic era more than on “Diggin’ Your Scene” with its Rolling Stone guitars and nasal brit-pop vocals.

While “I Just Wanna See” has a really cool marching chorus, this isn’t the hookiest Smash Mouth has ever been. The melody is fabulous. “Satellite” is lounge heaven. “Radio” is a great tune about the highs and lows of being in a hit band; “Who did you know coming up/ who will you know going down/ who’s getting sent back down/ there’s a brand spanking new kid in town.”

“Then The Morning Comes” starts off sounding a lot like “Walking On The Sun”, but doesn’t live up to its predecessor. The rest of the album is a lot of pop clichs and borrowed hooks. Nothing is exceptional, exciting, or fresh.

“Can’t Get Enough Of You Baby” has been added to the album and is a really nice addition. “All Star” is okay. It’s the first single and what you’ve come to expect from Smash Mouth. If you buy the record in hopes of getting ten or so tracks like this, you will be disappointed, but if you are looking for a well-rounded disc, you’ll be damn happy.
