Simon Says – Jump Start

Simon Says
Artist: Simon Says
Title: Jump Start
Label: Hollywood
Rating: 5/10

Simon Says has just released its first album, Jump Start. I enjoyed the alternative garage sound of the band. The album itself is well put together with twelve tracks to enjoy. The problem is that all of the tracks sound severely alike. I found myself getting lost in the music, not aware when one song ended and the next began. The repetition made it hard for me to listen to the album and determine which songs I liked and which I didn’t.

The lyrics are mostly about the problems they find in life. “Life Jacket” is the only song I found on this album with a positive message. Even though it is difficult to tell apart from the others, it is an uplifting and encouraging song. The song explains to people that you cannot be told what to do with your life; you have to follow what you believe in and let no one tell you who to become.

“Seamless” was the best song on the album. I found it flowing through my head hours after I had played it. The song describes a person that has to be perfect in every way. This may remind you of a few people you know. The lyrics include, “insecurity forces you to pick apart the ones that threaten your rank”, meaning that if there is someone that might appear to become better than you, you have to degrade them, thus satisfying your own integrity.

Simon Says has produced an admirable first album and will hopefully become more popular in the future. The catchy rhythm and original lyrics do not quite make up for the repetition, but there is no rough language and it is suitable for almost anyone to listen to.
