Chief among Blackalicious is Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel. Their style will draw comparisons to Outkast, but its not the new groups that Blackalicious gets their inspiration from its those from the days of old when hip hop and soul had no names.
Blazing:
“Blazing Arrow” – Burn a whole through all the hip-hop patterns.
“Sky Is Falling” – A chorus that puts a smile on your face with rhymes that reacquaint you with hip-hop and a hope for the future.
“4000 Miles” – funk galore.
“Make You Feel That Way” – Favorite song.
“Brain Washers” – This will make you feel.
“Aural Pleasure” – Lovely track that gets deeper and deeper.
Warm:
“Nowhere Fast” – Very reminiscent of De La Soul.
Smothering:
Nothing here is worthy of skipping over.
Blackalicious doesn’t even need the many guest stars like Dilated Peoples’ Rakka and Babu (“Passion”) or Jurassic 5’s Chali 2NA (“4,000 Miles”) or Ben Harper or Keke Wyatt to make for a great album. Blazing Arrow is hot and on target. It’s a hip-hop album that is way on center but way off of the material that we hear on the radio today. Believe me, that is a great thing.
