Raphael Saadiq. You might not know the name, you may not even know the face, but I’m certain you’d know the voice. Saadiq once the lead man of Tony Toni Tone, and most recently Lucy Pearl, is back on his first solo release, Instant Vintage.
Vintage:
“Be Here” – Not a classic, but still quite good.
“Different Times” – Nice duet.
“People” – Finally the track we were expecting.
“Make My Day” – One of the shortest tracks is one of the best.
Instant:
“Still Ray” and “Doing What I Can” – The beats rock, but the songs lose momentum.
“Excuse Me” – You’ll dig the melody.
“Tick Tock” – Interesting track. You get into it right away, but its still lacking that big star quality we once had with 3T.
Dusty:
“You’re The One That I Like” – Slow.
“Blind Man” – Blues and Saadiq don’t mix.
I’ve always liked Saadiq, but Instant Vintage isn’t vintage at all. It sounds modern, it sounds tame, and surely is no where close to being a classic.
