Blackstreet – Level II

Blackstreet
Artist: Blackstreet
Title: Level II
Label: Dreamworks
Rating: 5/10

Corporate Line: According to the members of BLACKstreet, the variety of sounds heard on Level II goes a long way toward explaining its appeal. “We’ve always been a mixture of gospel, street music and R&B,” says Hannibal.

The Good:
“She’s Hot” – Fantastic song that goes back to their roots.
“It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye” – A ballad that doesn’t go soft.

The Marginal:
“Bygones” – Nice verse, but the chorus is really lacking.
“Ooh Girl” – Revisiting tracks from the past doesn’t always go well. Here it goes so-so.
“Why, Why” – It rips from Michael Jackson and you wonder if that is the reason why it sounds so sweet.

The Bad:
“Wizzie” – They have continued to try and make up a “No Diggity” and this isn’t it.
“Don’t Touch” – Lame interaction between Blackstreet and female vocalist ruins this track.
“Deep” – This vocal effect was ‘in’ about three years ago. It sounds aged and even if it didn’t it still sounds bad.

Frankly: Blackstreet has always given us good singles, but usually they drop off after a few tracks and the same goes for Level II. A few tracks will satisfy you, but after that there isn’t much more to satisfy.
