Scissor Sisters – Scissor Sisters

Scissor Sisters
Artist: Scissor Sisters
Title: Scissor Sisters
Label: Universal
Rating: 6/10

CORPORATE LINE: Scissor Sisters bring together rollicking guitar riffs, throbbing synths and a whole bunch of wicked lyrics. Their influences skitter through glimmers of vintage Bowie, Roxy Music and Elton John to Giorgio Moroder, burlesque theatre and rock opera. At college, Jake had majored in Fiction Writing, and numbers like the catchy glam rockin’ groove of their debut major single ‘Laura’ (‘I gotta give myself one more chance/To be the man that I know I am’) weave feature-length stories through song. Sometimes, it sounds like they’re partying hard on cheap champagne; at other points, the moods are downtempo and beautifully, surprisingly wistful: radio-friendly soundtracks for the morning after.

THE GREAT:
“Laura” – Bizarre cross between Michael Jackson’s “schmon”-style with the oddness that doesn’t outsize the fact that this is good.
“Take Your Mama” – Pure Elton John in this brilliant stroll into the past that the younger listeners need to experience.

THE AVERAGE:
“T*ts on the Radio”- A disco party that reaches too far and never quite satisfies.

THE BAD:
“Comfortably Numb” – This Bee Gees style rendition is mind-numbing.
“Filthy/Gorgeous” – Don’t judge a book by its cover—that’s the theme but the song leaves little to be desired.

FRANKLY: Scissor Sisters are living in the past and it might be a good thing—depending on which side of the fence you are on. Either way it is surprisingly refreshing in the current bland music market.
