Josh Rouse is working at bringing us a concept album based on the trials and tribulations of a small-town southern couple in the 1950’s.
From the opener “Nothing Gives Me Pleasure” you are hooked. There is a beauty and heartfelt quality that reminds you of a movie that touches your soul. “Miracle” does much the same and tows the line well.
“Ugly Stories” looks deeper into the dark side of life while keeping a soft outer edge. “Women And Men” is lovely. The entire album flows wonderfully right through the final cut “The Whole Night Through”. From track one on through eleven Rouse has proven he’s grown a lot musically and emotionally.
There are a few songs that don’t hold up as well, however they are still wonderful songs all their own. Josh Rouse has put together a solid album; Under Cold Blue Stars sounds like a tragedy but ends up being a great piece of musical theater.
