The new album by The Rentals, Seven More Minutes, is absolutely packed with great music. This disc has it all, from music that makes you want to jump around the house, to sweet and wistful refrains. Weezer’s ex-bassist Matt Sharp is the man responsible for putting this great album together. He provided the base and drew in some wonderful talent for assistance. That Dog’s Petra Haden and Elastica’s Donna Matthews help out with some great vocals on a number of songs. Their contributions make this album unique and above average. Blur’s Damon Albarn and Ash’s Tim Wheeler add to the amazing amount of variety. There are quite a few driven and loud songs that are filled with an energy that is impossible to ignore. However, the female vocals soften and smooth the hard edges, helping to give this album an exceptional sound. Each one of the songs is something new and different and, more importantly, they are all good. These are songs that will appeal to the pop culture of America. They will be impossible to escape on the radio.
“Getting By” is the first single to be released and it will be popular. It draws you in immediately with some catchy guitar and a great chorus, and only gets better. It’s upbeat and fun, a song for a summer party. “She Says It’s Alright” is a gentle acoustic tune sweetly rendered. “Big Daddy C.” is an outstanding song that starts with lots of arrhythmic distortion and a very funky feel and morphs to include a lovely chorus and then comes down slowly. “My Head Is In The Sun” includes the lyrics that the album is named for and is a good example of the more melancholy side of this album. Sharp pleads for “Seven more minutes to hide away/ Far from everyone/Seven more minutes slide away/Somewhere in the sun.” From start to finish, Seven More Minutes is just a great album. Its energy and drive are wonderful and the diversity in the music is amazing.
