Damien Rice – O

Damien Rice
Artist: Damien Rice
Title: O
Label: Vector
Rating: 7.5/10

Company Line: Damien Rice, one of the most highly rated young songwriters in Ireland, will release his debut album “O” in the US on June 3, 2003. “O” was released in Ireland in February 2002 on Damien’s own label and has established itself in the Irish album Top Ten, obtaining platinum status in a mere three months.

The Good:
“Delicate” – Sing it. Halleluiah.
“Volcano” – Glorious. The basic elements are vocals and guitar. What else do you really need?
“Amie” – Sometimes the songs that sound so simple end up being great.
“Older Chests” – Lovely.

The Marginal:
“The Blower’s Daughter”
“I Remember” – Gets too arty.

The Ugly:
You are ugly. Wait. I’m sorry.

Frankly: Damien Rice has all the ingredients to make you feel painfully good. It has the occasion to sound like Coldplay. But remember everyone said Coldplay sounded like Radiohead until they realized Coldplay might actually be better. Think about that one for a while.
