Rico – Sanctuary Medicines

Rico
Artist: Rico
Title: Sanctuary Medicines
Label: Chrysalis
Rating: 8.5/10

Rico makes some damn interesting songs. Opening with “Shave Your Head” he muses, “put on your boots/ get out of bed/ music is dead/ this isn’t the sixties anymore.”

Rico puts out “Smokescreen” and its troubled reason. Even more eerie is the bid for suicide on “Black Limo”. “Overload” parades around U2 but hails a vengeance much more bitter.

Oh joy. “This That” has the word fuck in it well over a few dozen times. It starts every verse, and let’s just say it’s probably the song every artist has dreamed of writing once or twice before. From that he “takes one step forward and two steps back” on “State”.

Rico is Nine Inch Nails with reasoning everyone can follow. It’s not so heady that you get lost in the meaning or lack thereof. Rico’s songwriting is fantastic and the musical melodies fit the mood. He gives us eleven tracks of emotions that range from uneasiness to levelheaded reason, like “if you’re still making records without your pain/ then you’re still making records that sound the same.” Amen, brother.
