At nineteen, Jessica Riddle grabbed us with her sweet single, “Even Angels Fall”, from the 10 Things I Hate About You soundtrack. She’s back, now with a full-length album and a lot of spunk.
“I Want You” is light and airy. “Sadly Beautiful” sounds like it has the same verse as the previous song, but the chorus has been tweaked. It’s interesting to say the least. Although “Symphony” borrows samples shamelessly for melody, it’s the idea of the symphony coming in as she sings the chorus that’s truly lame, considering it’s a synthetic sound.
I know it’s cool to follow trends, but “I’m Sorry” is like the reverse of Alanis’ “Thank You”. It’s not very original. However, “Your Girl” makes up for it with sweet vengeance. “Everything” is silky pop mixed with country. All right, maybe it isn’t very country and my ears are full of wax, but it reminds me of all of the big country to pop crossover albums. “Indifference” gives up a familiar sense of some old track, but I can’t put my finger on it. I have to say that the whole there’s-a-message-here thing is overdone. I’m tired of the anti this and anti that nonsense.
Jessica Riddle has a sultry voice. It’s not too heavy or too high and whiny. It seems to have a middle ground, which has its pluses. The best thing about Key Of A Minor is that Riddle proves she can get serious, but also not take everything so personally. That’s a lot of maturity for a nineteen-year-old.
