Ray J – This Ain’t A Game

Ray J
Artist: Ray J
Title: This Ain’t A Game
Label: Atlantic
Rating: 3/10

Ray J may be the brother of Brandy, but don’t expect him to be sappy sweet. He’ll bling and he’ll sing with Lil’ Kim, and that should give you an idea what he is about to bring.

Ray J seems to want to separate himself as much as possible from his squeaky clean sister. “Takin’ Control” is explicit. Normally it wouldn’t be a big deal, but this album is marketed to kids, so the content is coming as a major surprise. When the sexual invitation of “Formal Invite” came rolling through my speakers, I couldn’t believe my ears. It’s a surprise because he’s barely old enough to buy his own album and because the song is terrible.

Ray J is best when he’s being tender on tracks like “Keep Your Head Up”. I’m trying to figure out now what the deal is with this guy. Is he trying to be hard? Is he trying to be sexy? Is he trying to be real? He’s not coming across as anything but a wannabe. Sorry to Ray J, but being mature is more than just pretending you are.
