THE GREAT:
“Hold Me Now” – Even though it sounds like a song from the Brady Bunch its impossible to ignore just how sunny and happy it makes you feel.
THE AVERAGE:
“A Long Day Continues” – Continues for nearly nine minutes. The Polyphonic Spree would like us to believe they are inventing something new—they’re not. They often times sound like the Flaming Lips with a choral section.
“When The Fool Becomes A King” – Pretty—too bad the lyrics aren’t on the level.
“Diamonds/Mild Devotion to Majesty” – A majestic bore. The harmonies are not the issues—it’s the monotony that gets you.
THE BAD:
“One Man Show” – Monotonous. The opera-style singer comes in and what should have sounded beautiful sounded creepy.
FRANKLY: The Polyphonic Spree give good melody, harmony, and spirit—but what about substance? What about offering something more than an evening with the Brady Kids? Perhaps this cults leader Tim DeLaughter (no they aren’t a cult but don’t they look like it?) can utilize the twenty-five members at his disposal and come up with something original. Together We’re Heavy is the album number two but is the same old situation where the Polyphonic Spree attempt to be the Flaming Lips and Spirtualized all in one.
