The Good:
“Section 1” – “holiday” sounds spiritual and captures an era, a piece in time and music that has long disappeared.
“Section 3” – Lovely like a wonderful summer breeze.
“Section 8” – “I found my soldier girl”. How could something so bizarre sound so lovely?
The Marginal:
“Section 2” – Very minimalist in an epic setting with all it’s Beatles inspired melodies bouncing all over.
“Section 4” – If DeLaughter is going after the Wayne Coyne (singer of the Flaming Lips) sound then he hit it just not square on the head.
“Section 7” – You could love this more if you didn’t think they were stealing their ideas from the Flaming Lips album The Soft Bulletin.
The Ugly:
“Section 10” – If they thought this was a good idea then they are insane. This 35 minute track is nothing but pure nonsense. What a terrible way to go out and sure to drop the rating down a few notches.
Frankly: The Polyphonic Spree has borrowed from days long past and from artists like the Flaming Lips and Beatles in attempting to make music that will spoil your senses. You almost feel like these tracks were handed down from heaven with their chorus chugging out brilliant little melodies alongside flutes and wind chimes. Dressed in robes this group rocks, at least I think it’s a group. If it’s a cult I just wonder where I sign up.
