As one of the hardest working indie bands ever, Poster Children have just released their seventh album, New World Records. The band has been in the music business for over twelve years, touring almost non-stop. You may have caught Poster Children at Lollapalooza a few years back with headliners Sonic Youth and Beck.
New World Records is a continuation of the band’s unique punk/pop style. If you’re into the whole punk/pop scene, you may enjoy this record more than I did. Many of the tracks beat the same sound or repetitive chords and riffs right into the ground. The overall musical content on this record is not horrible, but the singing really detracts from the quality. The lead singer’s voice just doesn’t have the energy to match the upbeat songs on New World Records. However, “Chemicals” is a real gem. It serves up a dirty bass line that is really catchy. “Time to Kill” is a strange sounding tune because the structure of the song displays a bouncy funk bass lick with tripped out, airy effects coming from the guitars in all directions.
This album would be better if the singing were more emotional. Poster Children have installed a special bonus for fans that buy this record: five colorful screen savers, three raw sounding live videos, and a cool game for either 95/98 Windows or Mac computers.
