Gilles Peterson – Incredible Sounds

Gilles Peterson
Artist: Gilles Peterson
Title: Incredible Sounds
Label: Epic
Rating: 3/10

So let me get this straight: there’s an alternative side to dance music? Gilles Peterson has released a mixed record that’s left this writer scratching his head. People who listen to this mix may be blown away by his untouchable mixing abilities of blending soul/house, dance jazz, and Latin-house into one set. I have total respect for Gilles’s talents because it’s hard to craftily mix three different styles of dance music without losing your audience, but I think I got lost after track five, “Les Fleur”.

All INCredible Sound records have been one disappointment after another for me. As is the case with many of them, the first two tracks are good. “I Can See The Future” by Incognito and “I Am The Black Gold of The Sun” by Nu Yorican Soul grabbed me by my feet with their funk and laid back groove, but there were no good tunes to follow them up. The rest of the mix is pretty much down tempo, there’s jazz music blended with light hip-hop and Latin-house. I never really caught onto the whole Latin explosion thing, so the Latin house songs mixed into the record left me feeling like I had too much Tequila. I recovered a bit from my hangover when Gilles comes in the back door with the relieving beats of Critical Point featuring Vikter Duplaix’s “Message” to pump some life back into the record.

I would use this record as background music to entertain guests because the record offers variety, but I’d hope they wouldn’t think I’m a bad host for playing it. The only thing positive about it is that there are no limits or rules in what Gilles selected for his mix. The release of this disc could possibly open the doors for other dj’s who like to spin a wide variety of music.
