Company Line: Ask Beyonce what she wants people to hear when they listen to Dangerously In Love, her debut solo album, and the multi-platinum-selling pop/urban recording artist answers, “My range. I want them to hear all of the musical influences from hip-hop to rock to jazz, there’s even a Shuggie Otis sample. I want them to really hearthe talent. I know that folks love me as a pop star. Now I want them to understand me as an artist.”
The Good:
“Crazy In Love” – The funny thing is that amidst the horns and hip-hop beats Beyonce outshines Jay-Z.
“The Closer I Get To You” – Luther Vandross proves he can still shine like a Diamond.
“Speechless” – Head and shoulders above the other ballads.
“Me, Myself And I” – Love doesn’t always go the way you hope.
“Be With You” – You’d expect ballads and this track hits the love bone.
“That’s How You Like It” – Jay-Z drops the foundation while Beyonce builds it from there.
The Marginal:
“Naughty Girl” – A track about being naughty ought to be a little more dangerous or even interesting.
“Signs” – Lyrical drought.
“Baby Boy” – Typical R&B. Sean Paul might be the hottest thing going right now but here he hangs like wallpaper.
The Ugly:
“Hip Hop Star” – I can’t believe Big Boi is involved in such a trivial song. Beyonce should have cut this one loose.
Frankly: Beyonce proves she can go it alone. There is a longing for the delicious harmonies of Destiny’s Child however you can’t deny she can go with the best of the R&B divas out today.
