Pearl Jam’s newly released live recording, Live On Two Legs, will send you madly mood swinging. I wanted to rage, cry, laugh, and then ravage the ever hypnotic Eddie Vedder. Soundgarden’s ex-drummer, Matt Cameron, joins the boys here to create a musical experience that showcases the talent that brought Pearl Jam into the limelight when they first appeared on the scene. The first track, “Corduroy”, is highlighted by an inspiring guitar solo and “Given to Fly” is played in a way so that the music is the perfect companion to the vocals. “Hail, Hail” gives the listener an energy infusion. I was especially impressed by “Daughter” because they integrated Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” and then slid into “W.M.A” from vs., the band’s second album. This alone is reason enough to buy Live On Two Legs.
Pearl Jam then woos you with “Small Town”. It left me feeling that I had discovered some forgotten memory archive. It’s a beautiful song played to stroke your innermost strains of happiness. One of the most emotional songs that I have ever heard from Pearl Jam is “Black”. From the first chord, I was captivated by its sorrow and transformed by its loveliness. There is also a bonus guitar solo entangled in this song. Because of the respect the band has for Neil Young, they honor him with their rendition of “Fuckin’ Up”. If you are a Pearl Jam fan, this is a cd that you must have. If not, it could definitely turn your ear their way. There is only one song out of the sixteen featured that I would say is mediocre and I will leave you to figure out which one it is. Overall, this is a truly impressive collection. The sound quality is fantastic and the music is tight. This is no synthetic Pearl Jam. It is the real thing.
