Parliament – Chocolate City

Parliament
Artist: Parliament
Title: Chocolate City
Label: Mercury
Rating: 6/10

Corporate Line: No artist will ever match the P.Funk experience of the ’70s. Parliament, led by George Clinton, was the Uncut Funk – hip-shaking grooves, ear-splitting guitars, classical keyboards, jazzy horns, massed choral vocals and high concept lyrics. This was extraterrestrial, psychedelic. The B-o-m-b. Today, when artists sample the funk, they go to Parliament. Today, when music fans want to blow their minds, they go to Parliament.

The Great:
“Ride On” – Come on baby let’s ride on. Delicious like milk chocolate.

The Average:
“Together” – A gorgeous track it’s just too bad there is no meat here… no verses all chorus.
“Chocolate City” – Interesting, just not on the up or downside.
“If It Don’t Fit (Don’t Force It)” – One listen and you’ll be singing along.

The Bad:
“Let Me Be” – Sounds like a soundtrack for a Halloween. It goes too far off the track and doesn’t fit in with the rest of the album.
“Side Effects” – Bleak.

Frankly: Parliament brings the talent in full force with Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrel, and Eddie Hazel led by George Clinton. There are moments of glory and then there are moments where you scratch your head. Chocolate City is pleasure and pain but simply enough there isn’t enough pleasure to make one happy.
