The Neptunes – Clones

The Neptunes
Artist: The Neptunes
Title: Clones
Label: Star Trek
Rating: 5/10

Company Line: It would be cliché to say that the Neptunes need no introduction. But the truth is that—if you’re reading this—you have at least a passing knowledge of the Neptunes. You’ve danced to their revolutionary sound, from Nelly’s “Hot In Herre” to Jay-Z’s “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It to Me)” to Britney Spears’ “I’m A Slave 4 U” to Clipse’s “Grindin’” to Mystikal’s “Shake Ya Ass” to Usher’s “U Don’t Have to Call” to Busta Rhymes’ “Pass the Courvoisier” to Snoop Dogg’s “Beautiful” to Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money” to N.O.R.E.’s “Nothin’” to… Well, the point is that production wizards Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo have been making the soundtrack to your days, nights and everything in between for the past few years.

The Good:
“It Wasn’t Us” ft. Ludacris – Finally an MC that doesn’t sound tired. The beat isn’t overdone in an attempt to outshine the weak vocals.
“If” ft. Nelly – He doesn’t need the Neptunes to kick a hot track.
“Pop Shit” ft. Dirt McGirt (ODB) & Pharrell – ODB is up to the same no good that sounds good.

The Average:
“Light Your Ass On Fire” ft. Busta Rhymes & Pharrell – Busta’s ode to… see title.
“It Blows My Mind” ft. Snoop Dogg – Pharrell tries to save Snoop from a rap mess.
“Hot Damn” ft. Clipse and Pharrell – Clipse is saved by a hot chorus.

The Ugly:
“Blaze Of Glory” ft. Clipse, Pharrell, & Ab-Liva – Weak, terrible chorus and Clipse couldn’t rhyme his way out of an open mic competition.
“Frontin’” ft. Jay-Z and Pharrel – Pharrell’s singing is embarrassing. When it comes to his own voice he must be tone deaf.
Tracks 10-13 – The rocks tracks are unbearable.

Frankly: Great producers with bad singers, i.e. Pharrell and many rappers. This album has no cohesion and when it comes down to it, bad songs.
