Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails. He’s amazing even while he still seems to be suffering from an incurable depression. As his musical prowess grows, his words on occasion seem a clich of the NIN past. The wonderful thing about The Fragile is Reznor’s work away from the traditional verse-chorus-verse. He does employee it, but when he doesn’t, the songs seem loveless and more driven.
If you have become despondent and uninterested at Reznor’s long layoff, you’ll find that you won’t hold it against him for very long. NIN makes music like no other. Reznor could make an entire album without vocals and still wreak havoc. Nothing Reznor does is simplistic or average; he’d give artists like Aphex Twin a run for his musical marbles.
The first and last thing you will notice is that this album is like a collage. There is no single bit that stands above the rest. The album is itself a whole work of art. Reznor suffers for his art, and though his pain brings us joy, you just can’t help but hope for more.
