Nine Black Alps – Everything Is

Nine Black Alps
Artist: Nine Black Alps
Title: Everything Is
Label: Interscope
Rating: 7/10

FILE UNDER: Nine Black Alps = Nirvana-lite.

CORPORATE LINE: Nine Black Alps Release their Debut Album. The Product of their La Recording Sessions with Beck and Elliot Smith Producer Rob Schnapf, ‘everything Is’ Includes their Debut Single ‘shot Down’ which Smashed Into the Charts at 25, and the Single ‘not Everyone’ which is Enjoying a High Level of Support from Specialist Shows at R1, Xfm, Mtv2 and Kerrang.

THE GOOD:
“Ironside” – Catchy and unforgettable. Nine Black Alps hit their stride on what is the albums best song.
Cosmopolitan” – “You’re not pretty enough, you’re not skinny enough, you’re not
healthy enough, you’re not shaking at our touch… so shock me.” NBA takes shots at the press for never being interested enough. True for some perhaps but not for those of us who love music. This isn’t exactly the Manic Street Preachers in veracity. How is that for not being excited enough?
“Unsatisfied” – The second best song on the album and a track where the group isn’t trying to pretend they are something they aren’t.

THE AVERAGE:
“Everybody Is” – Enjoyable.
“Get Your Guns” – It has a Nirvana sensibility except the verse outshines the chorus. It’s interesting and has vast potential although it ends up short of being memorable.
“Not Everyone” – Again, another Nirvana send up. It’s enticing without being brilliant.

THE BAD:
“Southern Cross” – Should have been left off as the singer sounds terrible.

FRANKLY: Nine Black Alps have a lot of potential. They can’t be compared to Nirvana in the early days because Nirvana had an earnest sound that was incomparable. Nirvana sounded like a couple guys who were fighting for life. Nine Black Alps doesn’t have the same power or veracity. It is definitely more pop-tinged and all-in-all that isn’t bad—unfortunately it doesn’t make for a potent or memorable album.
