“We just some country boys” announce Kentucky bred Nappy Roots on their sophomore release Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz. Their style is silky smooth hip-hop that never makes its way to the ground.
The country slammer doesn’t stop there as they kick of the Mississippi mud from their shoes on “Ballin On A Budget”. “Awnaw” smells fishy and awful familiar. It’s almost the same country grammar we were once handed before.
Nappy Roots lay it on tight with “Slums”. It gets funky and never lets up even into “Po Folks”. These two tracks give you the feeling that Nappy Roots finally found their groove. Too bad they don’t keep the steam as they roll into the angry “Life’s A Bitch”.
The problem with Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz is that there is no consistency. Either the song is funky or its been-there-done-that hip-hop. Not to mention that they aren’t consistently good either. They give something that is a gem and fall it up with something that belongs in the your garbage bin.
