Nas is back with his latest release, I am. The album features collaborations with some of the hottest stars of rap and R&B: Puff Daddy, Aaliyah, Scarface, and DMX.
You’ll find many similarities to his first album, Illmatic. Nas continues to use numerous samples and catchy hooks to keep the listener interested. For example, on “K-i-ss-i-n-g” Nas loops the sample from R. Kelly’s “When a Woman’s Fed Up” and lays one of his signature raps overtop to create a smooth, laid back jam. “Life Is What You Make It” features a standout performance by DMX. “Hate Me Now”, featuring Puff Daddy, is quite a production. Not only does it feature Puff Daddy; it’s laced with Nas’ slick vocals and a symphony. Still, it resembles Puff Daddy’s “Come With Me” a little to much.
Other standouts are “Nas Is Like”, which is filled with a catchy sample from his own “It Ain’t Hard To Tell”, and “You Won’t See Me Tonight”, featuring Aaliyah and produced by Timbaland. The song has ‘hit’ written all over it. Overall, if you like Nas, you will be satisfied, but I don’t think this album will win any news fans in such a competitive rap game.
