I’m not much on confessions, but the reason I took on the new Shawn Mullins cd review was because I didn’t like the first record. Was I looking for redemption? No, just someone to spout on about. I’m guessing now after a few listens that maybe I didn’t give Shawn Mullins much chance the last time.
“Everywhere I Go” is distinctly alien, whereas “Up All Night” sounds quite familiar with all that yacking and stuff. That I could care less about. After all, it’s only one song.
Shawn Colvin comes along for “Somethin’ To Believe In” while Shelby Lynne dives into the sexy satin-covered “I Know”. “Lonesome, I Know You Too Well” is a tender take from the road. “North On 95” is another sad, sad road trip. The dueling guitar and mandolin add a perfect opening for a cute “Yellow Dog Song”. Mullins goes out with the beautifully wrenching “Time”.
There is something about a great song that draws you in. Mullins is a great storyteller, and for me that is a giant positive. I was so wrong about Shawn Mullins. He is one hell of a talented singer/songwriter. Maybe first impressions don’t mean as much as we think.
