If you recently watched Alanis’ unplugged performance on Mtv, then you know the power her voice possesses. Ever since I saw Alanis unplugged at the Grammy Awards years back performing “You Oughta Know”, I knew she had to give us more of the same. But on this disc, she offers nothing.
The album contains four songs from Jagged Little Pill , four from her latest record Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, four new songs, and one release from a soundtrack, “Uninvited”. Alanis’ Unplugged is not like the most lauded of all unplugged performances, that being done by Nirvana; Nirvana’s Unplugged was groundbreaking. Alanis’ performance provides us with no real changes, refinements, or something that’ll blow you away. Kurt Cobian took Bowie’s “Man Who Sold The World” to another level. Alanis takes The Police’s “King Of Pain” nowhere.
The four new tracks barely resonate. Alanis has the power to go up another level, but does she have the strength? It seems that after extensively touring she is just going through the motions. I wish Alanis had taken more chances with her voice and her songs. For someone who seems so liberal, she works like a conservative. I want to hear that big beautiful voice go crazy. Maybe she should learn some lessons from Janis Joplin, something about letting it all hang out.
