Alanis Morissette – Jagged Little Pill: Acoustic

Alanis Morissette
Artist: Alanis Morissette
Title: Jagged Little Pill: Acoustic
Label: Maverick
Rating: 7.5/10

CORPORATE LINE: The biggest-selling album by a female artist in history, Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill is 16 times platinum and Billboard’s Top Pop Album of the 90’s. Now, celebrating its 10th anniversary, Morissette and producer/co-writer have recorded the entire album in an acoustic version. Jagged Little Pill Acoustic (enhanced with exclusive content) features the songs in their original order and adds previously unreleased video footage from that era. Jagged Little Pill Acoustic is just what the doctor ordered.

THE GREAT:
“All I Really Want” – Sure, you’ve worn each of these songs out way back when but acoustically “All I Really Want” is gorgeous. The instrumentation really sticks out and of course Alanis’ vocals keep you swaying and singing along.
“Mary Jane” – Close your eyes and let Alanis’ voice absorb you. If you don’t feel shivers done your spine then you can’t possibly call yourself a music fan.
“You Oughta Know” – This version is magnificent. It’s slow sounds more cold and calculated than the original version.
“Right Through You” – Still gives you goosebumps.
“Forgiven” – Perhaps the best song on the record for one reason—you can finally understand every lyric and realize just how great and poignant the song is.

THE AVERAGE:
“Hand In My Pocket” – Not bad—but not great. The original version had an energy that was vital to the song.

THE BAD:
Nothing.

FRANKLY: Whether you were a huge fan of Alanis Morissette’s or not you can’t help but listen to Jagged Little Pill Acoustic and enjoy every second. Sure it’s the same material done differently but the difference is worth the purchase. Slow songs come fast and fast songs come slow–the intimacy makes it feel as if Morissette is singing right there for you and not in a studio. Close your eyes and hear these great songs anew.
