Mozella – I Will

Mozella
Artist: Mozella
Title: I Will
Label: Interscope
Rating: 8/10

CORPORATE LINE: While it may be tempting to compare her sound and style to everyone from Norah Jones to Lauryn Hill, 23-year-old MoZella stakes out her own musical territory–pop melodies, jazzy soulful vocals–on her debut album I Will. A beguiling blend of natural-born songwriting skills, a distinctive vocal gift and a lifetime steeped in music.

THE GOOD:
“You Wanted It” – In a sweet Norah Jones-esque style Mozella brings us into her world with a sassy voice that is hypnotizing.
“Killing Time” – This is a moment on the album where Mozella brings her own unique style. It’s not exactly Norah Jones or Ani Difranco—however Mozella mixes those ingredients and comes up with her own interesting stew and it works.
“Last $20” – This is a radio single if I’ve ever heard one. The line “the offer is still good until supplies last” is sweet and lovely.

THE AVERAGE:
“Love Is Something” – There is a nice urgency to the song and yet the song lacks a great hook or vibrancy.
“I Will” – The title track tries to grow on you. It has a rainy day feel that an artist like Norah Jones brings home but Mozella can’t sell it nearly as well.

THE BAD:
“What To Say” – Purely filler with an organ that reminds me of visiting a funeral.

FRANKLY: Mozella has an interesting style. She doesn’t play straight to the Norah Jones style like many female artists have tried to do. She has her own thing and it works. If the songs were stronger than this would have been a much stronger showing, however Mozella proves she has something to give and we look forward to her future.
