Moist is Canadian. So what does that mean, you ask? Well, nothing, but it seems that a lot of good Canadian bands never get their due in the States. It’s a shame because Moist is damn good. David Usher’s voice goes from tender to tortured in a moment’s notice while his group of fine musicians, Mark Makowy (guitars), Kevin Young (keyboards), Jeff Pearce (bassist), and Paul Wilcox (drums), make some absolutely dreamy music.
It has been four years since we last heard from them, but they are back and better than ever. “Push” is the first single, and I have to say they did a good job picking this. It’s not the album’s best tune, but it makes for a snappy radio track with a fine melody. It’s the next song, “Breathe”, that tore me apart. Although I could sing the lyrics to Radiohead’s “Creep” right over the verses, it’s still precious.
I enjoy the uncertainty of “Alive”. The title says one thing while the mood shines like another. After that crunch, you get the tender touch of “Tonight”. The album ends with the beautiful strike of “Place”. Mercedes 5 And Dime has both its tender and its rough aspects, but the flavors are like a sundae with all the toppings. It all tastes good when mixed together.
