Mandy Moore – So Real

Mandy Moore
Artist: Mandy Moore
Title: So Real
Label: 550
Rating: 5/10

Sony has high hopes for their fifteen-year-old find, Mandy Moore. They’re hoping she’ll be their answer to Britney Spears. If you’re curious enough to read on, I’ll tell you whether or not you should jump on this bandwagon.

The songs are as worthwhile as anything you’d get from Britney Spears, but a little less provocative. The title track, “So Real”, is destined to become a hit single. It’s certainly as strong a contender as the album’s first single, “Candy”. Neither track really tests Moore’s vocal prowess, but both prove she has plenty to get herself by.

“What You Want” has weak verses, but a very melodic chorus. I dislike the way that you’re not sure whether Moore is singing for the girls with Barbies or the ones with beepers. Moore’s ballad skills aren’t bad, but “Walk Me Home” isn’t exactly a strong enough song for her to strut her stuff either.

“Lock Me In Your Heart” is a real stinker. “Quit Breaking My Heart” builds from bad to worse and crashes into a real bore. “Let Me Be The One” left me confused. I just have a feeling that it could have been much, much better.

“Not Too Young” is a little disturbing considering Moore is fifteen. The song has a troubling mixed message as the chorus proceeds with, “I’m not too young to know the right things to do.” Whatever they are trying to sell, I’m not buying. This album starts off with a few potential hits, but goes downhill after “Candy” and just can’t stop the downward spiral. Toe to toe, Moore has a ways to go.
