Tonya Mitchell – I Represent

Tonya Mitchell
Artist: Tonya Mitchell
Title: I Represent
Label: Universal
Rating: 4/10

Tonya Mitchell utilizes all that has proven to be successful in the past (i.e. whatever Britney Spears does, you do the same).

The first single, “I Represent”, is a perfect example of that formula. There’s nothing quite unique about it or original. “Broken Promises” has a catchy chorus, but it gets lost on you pretty quickly.

“Stay” starts off and you get the distinct feeling that you’ve heard this before and that Diane Warren had something to do with it, but the song doesn’t live up to the Warren name, proving to be from some wannabe clones from her school of songwriting.

The rare track that actually grooves to a different beat is “You’re The One I Want”. “Wasted Breath” is a nice slow jam that could bring slow dancers to tears.

I Represent suffers from what most pop albums do today: too many slow songs and not enough tracks to really get you out of your seat. After track number four the album pretty much slows to a halt and never gets on its feet again. That is the kiss of death.
