I’ve enjoyed Modest Mouse since their days on indie labels like Up, K, and Sub Pop Records. Their sound has always been their own and Modest Mouse’s first major label release finds them continuing with what has served them well for years.
“Dark Center Of The Universe” speaks to melody, but walks around for quite some time. The tender caress of “Perfect Disguise” lulls you into a false sense of security. The serenity is sweet, but only momentary.
Modest Mouse is good. Of course, they sound bratty, cynical, and often overly intelligent, or maybe that is what they want us to think. Sometimes the Mouse gets a little silly and obnoxious, but if you can get by that, then you’ve got yourself a great album.
