Mint Condition – Life’s Aquarium

Mint Condition
Artist: Mint Condition
Title: Life’s Aquarium
Label: Elektra
Rating: 7/10

Mint Condition is not your average R&B group. While Stokley belts out the notes, you will notice that he is backed by a full group of established artists. With a mixture of musical interests, from funk to salsa and jazz to rock, their unique style brings you back time and time again. There is always more to Life’s Aquarium with each listen. Known best for “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)”, you’ll soon know them for so much more as Life’s Aquarium bursts onto the world.

“Touch That Body” has nice harmonies and a great hook. “Be Like Something” is right on. I’m not sure what it is about the track, but I just couldn’t stop listening. “Who Can You Trust” is about exactly what the title says. It is really too bad that everything they talk about is so damn true. Check out the funky bridge. They know how to steal your attention.

My favorite tracks go right in order, starting with “If You Love Me”. Precious. It is simply one of the best slow tracks I’ve heard in a while. “Spanish Eyes” mixes the twinkle of Spanish guitar licks and a little seduction by a senorita and Stokley. “Call Me” is timely, if not dated with the ring of a fax machine. “Just The Man” is sticky sweet, as is “Tonight”. They just keep building up, song after song, without letting you down. “Tonight” is an aphrodisiac. “Leave Me Alone” is a groggy rock track, ending this album on a low note that is anything but. And don’t miss the crazy jam hiding at the end of track twelve.

Mint Condition has everything a group could want. These guys have so much talent that they could last for decades, not just years. They might be this generation’s greatest R&B group. Life’s Aquarium will appeal to your father, sister, and brother. The generations aren’t gapped here. Their music has mass appeal and a beauty that is deeper than someone proving they can hit every vocal note on the scale. In one moment, they go from making you dance to making love.
