Mest – Wasting Time

Mest
Artist: Mest
Title: Wasting Time
Label: Maverick
Rating: 6/10

Mest looks like a bunch of skater slack cats, and you know what? That’s exactly what they are, except they call Chicago home rather than Southern California. Their sound isn’t unique to them; it was born decades ago, adopted by the Clash-spawning generations of punksters. Mest’s musical machine is the same combination of punk-pop that brought Blink 182, and Green Day before them, to the television sets of kids around the globe.

“Hotel Room” sings about missing that special possession in life, and “Long Days Long Nights” seems quite the same. Mest’s first single will be “What’s The Dillio?”. The track is tinged with Sublime flavor. “Drawing Board” goes balls to the wall but never quite breaks those walls down.

As Wasting Time starts to wind down, you realize that most tracks never find their own personalities. Although some toward the end, like “Lonely Days” and “Wasting My Time”, are quite nice, they aren’t much different from earlier tracks. Most every song has torrent distortion filled to the brim with power chords. It now seems punk has nowhere left to go, but I hope that isn’t true. Still, no one has found a way to take punk out of its current stale state. Though Mest doesn’t take music to another level, they still know how to have fun.
